Kent Coin Club

It was great to see yet another strong turnout for our July meeting. Our program was on Lincoln cents, specifically the origin and design of the coin. For August we will shift gears a bit and focus on DuPont, which of course has had a large influence on this region. The company has issued many tokens and other numismatic-related pieces so I'm sure we're all looking forward to exploring them. Thanks to everybody who was there for our June meeting, where we focused on US proof coins and dove into proof sets but also the pre-proof set era (before 1936). We had another good turnout in April, where the focus was on encased coins such as "good luck" pieces proclaiming "Keep Me and Never Go Broke!" I suppose that is technically correct but not too comforting considering most of them were cents, although we also got to a few examples of the much less common encased dollars. The program was three small topics, the last of which on WW2 US OPA ration tokens and food rationing in general led to some interesting recollections from the group. Next month the focus will be on encased coins, and show and tell will be the famous "whuddevah ya got". The topic was error coins, and the presentation was especially interesting since it focused on types of errors other than the well-known double dies. There are some great numismatic stories that are probably too narrow to support a full presentation. It was great to see everybody at our last meeting for 2025! We had our traditional pizza party augmented by piles of homemade cookies, and topped it off with a spirited wooden nickel auction. We had great turnout for our November meeting, and we also had an excellent program on contemporary counterfeits with a focus on US coins. It was interesting to hear about the different methods of making a counterfeit coin that would "pass" and that some of the cruder methods relied on poor lighting and poor eyesight to even have a chance of being accepted.
